Biography
Nelson obtained his undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus in 2001 with honors. He completed his M.S. (2002 and PhD (2005) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Sate University. From January 2006 to June 2011, Nelson was faculty at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez, and during this time participated in several summer research programs for faculty at the Air Force Research Laboratories (2006 and 2007), National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) (2008) and the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) (2009). In 2010, Nelson was awarded the NSF Career award. His research interests are micro and nanometer-sized sensors and actuators (or transducers), characterization of smart and multifunctional materials and their integration in microsystems.

Nelson Sepúlveda Alancastro to lead electrical and computer engineering
Michigan State University Professor Nelson Sepúlveda Alancastro has been named the chairperson of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) effective April 1, 2026. He has served as interim chair since July 2024. Engineering Interim Dean John Papapolymerou said he is pleased Sepúlveda will continue to serve in a key leadership role.

Detecting concussion injuries using novel neck ‘bandages’
Sensors used to detect head impacts in athletes who play high-impact sports like football traditionally have been placed inside their helmets, which can lead to false or incomplete readings. Michigan State University researchers have created a thin sensor that instead can be worn on an athlete’s neck, which has been shown to be 90% effective at identifying concussion injuries.

Professor Percy Pierre retires
There's a hall of fame that sits on three shelves in Percy Pierre's office in the Michigan State University College of Engineering.
