New faculty 2020-21
The MSU College of Engineering has welcomed nine new faculty members this fall, adding to the diverse engineering and scientific talent available in the college. The college currently has 243 tenure-system faculty educators.

MSU researchers have created for the first time a miniature human heart model in the laboratory, complete with all primary heart cell types and a functioning structure of chambers and vascular tissue. "These minihearts constitute incredibly powerful models in which to study all kinds of cardiac disorders with a degree of precision unseen before," said Aitor Aguirre, the study's senior author and assistant professor of biomedical engineering.

The winners of the 2019-20 Fitch H. Beach Award for Outstanding Research and for the Outstanding Graduate Student awards in each academic program in the College of Engineering have been announced.

The 2019-2020 Graduate Student Award winners in the Department of Biomedical Engineering are Cort Thompson and Victoria Toomajian, who have been recognized for their outstanding work.
NIH Blueprint D-Span Award
Ti'Air Riggins, a PhD student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, will advance MSU's ongoing research on implanted neurotechnology with a prestigious fellowship, an NIH Blueprint Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience Award.
New BAE chair
Bradley Marks has been named chairperson for the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at Michigan State University. The appointment is for two years. BAE offers joint academic programs spanning the College of Engineering and theCollege of Agriculture and Natural Resources(CANR).
Researcher Galit Pelled
Galit Pelled's fascination with the intelligent octopus dates back to her undergraduate days at Hebrew University in Israel where she cared for and fed the dexterous animal. Now she's studying octopuses to see if they hold the key to restoring limb function in humans with the use of new "smart" prosthetics.
