Scientific breakthroughs don't always happen in labs. For Sophia and Richard Lunt, Michigan State University researchers, many of their breakthroughs happen during neighborhood walks.

The tradition of Michigan State University's competitive success at the annual American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AlChE) Student Design Contest hit a new height this year. For the first time, all of MSU's submitted problem solutions won a national award. AlChE is the global organization for chemical engineers.

Two College of Engineering students represented Michigan State University at the S-STEM Symposium in Washington, D.C., from Sept. 12-14.

Three professors in the College of Engineering are among the 10 newest University Distinguished Professors at Michigan State University. The recognition - which honors achievements in the classroom, laboratory, and community -- is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member at MSU.

Michigan State University in East Lansing is working with two other universities to develop a freshwater recovery system to extract clean irrigation water from hydraulic fracking wastewater. The reclaimed water could help western states that need it for crops and livestock. Investigators are Andre Benard, working with James Klausner, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Thomas Bieler, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science at Michigan State University, has been named a Fellow of The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). The honor is presented to less than 1 percent of the 13,000 members. There are currently less than 100 active fellows in the society.
