University Distinguished Professor, Douglas E. Zongker Endowed Professor in Engineering
Biography
Anil K. Jain is a University Distinguished Professor and Douglas E. Zongker endowed professor at Michigan State University where he has taught and conducted research for over 50 years. He received his B.S. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (1969) and M.S. (1970) and Ph.D. (1973) degrees from The Ohio State University, all in Electrical Engineering. For his many advances in pattern recognition and biometrics, Jain was inducted into the United States National Academy of Engineering (2016), Indian National Academy of Engineering (2016), The World Academy of Sciences (2019), Chinese Academy of Sciences (2019) and the National Academy of Inventors (2015). Jain served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (1991-1994) and was awarded the Guggenheim, Humboldt and Fulbright fellowships along with the IAPR King-Sun Fu Prize. He was appointed to the Defense Science Board, Forensic Science Standards Board, and the AAAS study team on Latent Fingerprint Recognition. He has authored foundational books in both biometrics and pattern recognition including Introduction to Biometrics (Springer, 2011 and 2024), Handbook of Face Recognition (Springer, 2005, 2011, 2024), Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition (Springer, 2005, 2009, 2022), Handbook of Multibiometrics (Springer, 2006) and Algorithms for Clustering Data (Prentice-Hall, 1988). For his plethora of discoveries and applications in biometrics, his service to the research community, and his extensive mentorship, Jain was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2017), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2020) and Hong Kong Baptist University (2021). The BBVA Foundation granted him its Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Information and Communication Technologies (2025). His publications are available at Anil K. Jain - Google Scholar.

Six Engineering faculty honored at 2025 Investiture
MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D., and Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko congratulated the newest Endowed Chairs, Endowed Professors and MSU Research Foundation Professors and Red Cedar Professors on Feb. 18, including six from the College of Engineering.

2018 Achievements
Several important college leadership positions were established in 2018 -Yue Qi was chosen as Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity; Theo Caldwell was named Assistant Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity; and Katy Colbry was appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Services. Tim Hinds took over as Director of the First-Year Engineering CoRe program; Kyle Foster was promoted to Director of the Diversity Programs Office (DPO); and MSU Foundation Professor Yunhao Liu was named Chairperson Designee of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
National Academy of Inventors
Lawrence Drzal of Michigan State University has been elected a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Class of 2018.
