Spartan Engineers receive All-University Awards
Four faculty members and a group of community partners in the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Engineering received MSU’s highest honors during the 2024-2025 All-University Awards on April 7. One College of Engineering staff member and one alumnus were also celebrated for receiving International Awards, which will be presented on April 17.
Spartans helped shape world-changing discoveries
Spartans are natural innovators. They push the limits of discovery and create solutions that benefit all of us. In fact, Michigan State University is ranked in the top 50 of the National Academy of Inventors’ list of top U.S. universities granted utility patents and has been a top 100 university globally for 11 consecutive years.
MSU’s Xinpeng Zhao named a global leading innovator under 35
Xinpeng Zhao, 32, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been named to the 2024 MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35. The magazine chose Zhao for inventing “a glass-based coating that can cool the roof of a building by around 3.5 °C below ambient air temperature, which could reduce air-conditioning energy use by nearly 10% for a mid-rise building.”

3 MSU faculty named National Academy of Inventors Senior Members
Michigan State University researchers Evangelyn Alocilja, Richard Lunt and André Bachmann have been named Senior Members by the National Academy of Inventors. This year’s class of NAI Senior Members is the largest to date and hails from 60 NAI member institutions across the nation.

Chengcheng Fang is a 2022 Innovator Under 35
Michigan State University’s Chengcheng Fang has been named a 2022 Innovator Under 35 by the science and technology magazine MIT Technology Review. The magazine selected Fang for its list of “outstanding innovators who are younger than 35” because of her research’s potential to make batteries for electric vehicles run safer and last longer.

Richard Lunt, who is a national leader in solar technologies, will receive the 2022 Michigan State University Tech Transfer Achievement Award during the MSU Innovation Celebration on Monday, April 18.
