When faculty run afoul with the law, their university, or funding agencies it is often similar to how non-academics get into trouble; our ways tend to be just a little subtler. Severe consequences tend to be associated with flagrantly dishonest behavior, such as embezzlement, creative bookkeeping, or fraud. A great example is a former friend and ex-Dean of Engineering who is now a sheep farmer.
Most infractions are so clearly dishonest that avoiding unintentional commitment of those actions is elementary, but there are also some subtle traps that can be avoided by COMPLETE disclosure. Other areas of potential vulnerability including: redundant funding, intellectual property, visa applications, summer support, and income taxes. These issues and the magic bullets for avoiding trouble with respect to them are all addressed in this talk. Join us to learn how to avoid subtle traps and learn more about my friend, the sheep farmer.
Lunch will be provided!
