The launch of self-driving vehicle testing at the American Center for Mobility west of Detroit came with something that frequently confounds human drivers in Michigan — snow. Details about the study, including its cost, will be unveiled at the 2018 Washington (D.C.) Auto Show, which begins next month. The study involves Texas A&M and Michigan State University and the center will provide some money for the study. Associate Dean John Verboncoeur is among those advising ACM in its development.

Two research leaders at MSU's Axia Institute have been selected for the 2018 MSU Academy for Global Engagement (AGE)fellowship program, an initiative designed to empower early- to mid-career faculty to become the next generation of global researchers. Axia's Bahar Aliakbarian and Amanpreet Kaur will be two of the 10 fellows in the 2018 AGE cohort.

Design Day -- One of the projects of note was the Spartan Experience App (SEA). This app is intended to help students and visitors get around the MSU campus. Students Ryan Johnson, Nayana Kodur, Patrick Pale, Roy Perryman, and Scott Swarthout worked together on the app in their Senior Capstone Course to create the mobile app that they say they actually needed as MSU freshmen. The team members are students in the MSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Gun maker's exploding rifle leaves trail of injured hunters -- Martin Crimp, an MSU metals expert who examined a 10ML-II that exploded and caused a hunter to lose multiple fingers in 2009, told the AP the barrel of that gun was "metallurgically defective." A robotic fish may be an unlikely ally in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Swimming through streams and lakes, it will monitor the levels of antibiotics in the water, among other pollutants. "The idea is to put sensors on the robots so that you can gather data from different locations in an automated manner," said MSU Foundation Professor Xiaobo Tan.

Jacob Duckworth was named an outstanding intern by NASA for his fall internship at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He worked in the software, robotics and simulation division of the Johnson Space Center on systems that help facilitate human exploration and the development of space. He is a junior in MSU's Honors College, where is majoring in biosystems engineering and physics.

Applied Engineering Sciences junior Elizabeth Slifkin came to MSU because of the entrepreneurial programming offered. She has a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation. She started the student group OptimizeMSU, which focuses on social innovation and applying the entrepreneurial mindset to social problems.

Avid conservationist William A. Demmer (BS MECH EGR '70) was awarded the Thomas L. Washington Lifetime Commitment to Conservation Award by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission on Dec. 14. He is chief executive officer of Demmer Corp., River Caddis, Demmer Properties, Airport Realty, Demmer Investments, and Palmer Engineering.
