Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies John Verboncouer and MSU Foundation Professor Peter Savolainen, of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, are collaborating with an MSU research team to study the impact of autonomous vehicles on the future workforce. They will share a $2.49 million NSF grant that will examine what new knowledge and skills are needed in the workforce as mobility solutions emerge. Verboncoeur is also a professor in the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering.

An editorial on Sept. 27 in the Lansing State Journal called attention to several ways that local girls and women can learn more about STEM before applying for jobs. Edythe Copeland, CEO of Capital Area Michigan Works in Lansing, said MSU offers Women in Engineering programs designed to support and build a community for female engineering students. MSU also offers a Girls STEM Day for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. This year's event is Saturday, Nov. 23.

Pouyan Nejadhashemi was named an MSU Foundation Professor in September, which was announced by MSUToday.

Amirpouyan (A. Pouyan) Nejadhashemi, a professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, was named an MSU Foundation Professor on Sept. 17. He is a leading expert in water resources modeling. The honor is given to outstanding faculty who enhance the prominence of MSU through demonstrated excellence in research and teaching.

Jeffrey Nanzer has been awarded a director's fellowship from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA. Nanzer is the Dennis P. Nyquist assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

On Sept. 6, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced appointments to the Michigan Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (MI-STEM) Education Advisory Council. They include Adam F. Zemke, of Ypsilanti, the global STEAM education manager for Ford Motor Company and a former Michigan State Representative. He earned BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from MSU. Zemke will represent economic sectors of the state that rely on a workforce with a STEM education.

• Sept. 4:
For outstanding solutions in solving cryogenic engineering problems, Venkatarao (Rao) Ganni received a lifetime achievement award at the 2019 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. Ganni is the director of the MSU Cryogenic Initiative, professor of accelerator physics, and an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering.
• Sept. 11: Electrical and computer engineering doctoral student Thassyo Pinto will receive the 2019 Larry K. Wilson Award for extraordinary accomplishments in student activities from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest technical professional organization.
• Sept. 24: Jeffrey Nanzer, Dennis P. Nyquist assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, was awarded a highly competitive DARPA Director's Fellowship to advance his research in modern radar and wireless communications.
Sept. 27: Susan Masten, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been named deputy editor of the Environmental Engineering Science Journal, which is published monthly and features applications of environmental engineering and scientific discoveries.
