University Distinguished Professor Anil Jain is ranked #1 in the world in the 2020 edition of Top Scientists Ranking for Computer Science & Electronics, according to Guide2Research, one of the leading portals for computer science research. His H-index is 188. The ranking is based on a detailed examination of more than 6,000 profiles on Google Scholar and DBLP.

The threat of COVID-19 has disrupted fieldwork and lab experiments, John Verboncoeur - associate dean for research and graduate studies at MSU Engineering - tells IEEE. Research teams are operating at 80 to 90 percent efficiency. "The main challenge being the ability to explain complicated concepts without our traditional "waving hands about' and interactive work at the white- or blackboard," he explained.

Galit Pelled received a $2.35 million National Institutes of Health grant to analyze the complex movements of octopuses' eight arms. She is a professor of biomedical engineering, radiology and neuroscience.

Mechanical engineers have built a ventilator prototype from commonly available parts that only cost around $200. The experimental mechanical ventilator prototype can be assembled with high volume, in-stock materials and without advanced engineering training, said Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez, assistant professor of mechanical engineering. The project could help alleviate developing world concerns about medical equipment shortages.

Darrell Donahue was selected as the next dean of the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. He has been MSU's chair of the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering since July 2015. WVU's Davis College offers 22 undergraduate, 18 master's, and seven doctoral degree programs. It also maintains thousands of acres of farmland and forests throughout West Virginia.

• April 3: High-energy particle physicist Huey-Wen Lin is one of 25 early career academic scientists from across the United States named a 2020 Cottrell Scholar. Lin was selected for her research, "Unveiling the Three-Dimensional Structure of Nucleons." She has a joint appointment in the colleges of Engineering and Natural Science.
• May 26: Peng Zhang, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received a 2020 Young Investigator Program award from the U.S Office of Naval Research. This is one of the nation's oldest and most selective awards in science and technology, which funds researcher's scientific pursuits.
