Yiming Deng named ASNT Fellow

Award honors outstanding distinction in nondestructive testing

Yiming Deng of Michigan State University has been named a 2021 Fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), the world's largest technical society for nondestructive testing professionals. The award is among ASNT's highest honors and is presented for outstanding professional distinction and significant contributions to the advancement of nondestructive testing.

Yiming Deng

Deng is an associate professor in the Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). He develops sensors and data analytics systems for safety-critical engineering applications in safety, security, durability, reliability and sustainability for defense, energy and transportation infrastructure. He joined MSU in 2016.

His research interests include electromagnetic and acoustic nondestructive evaluation (NDE), structural health monitoring (SHM) for multi-scale, multi-resolution, and multi-parameter damage diagnosis and prognosis; applied electromagnetics and acoustics, and computational modeling.

MSU Foundation Professor John Papapolymerou, who is chairperson of the ECE department, said being named a fellow by their professional organization is among a faculty member's most distinguished career honors.

"Dr. Deng has established himself as one of the top worldwide experts in the development of new devices and systems for nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring applications," he said. "His efforts place MSU at the forefront of technological innovations in these areas and continues the department's strong and long tradition. This is a very well-deserved recognition for him, and we look forward to his future contributions and accomplishments."

Deng is associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Reliability (IEEE TREL), IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, Materials Evaluation (ME), Journal of Prognostics and Health Management (JPHM), and RAMS Proceedings. He serves as panelist and reviewer for National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), NDSEG Program (U.S. Department of Defense and American Society of Engineering Educators) and more than 40 scientific journals.  He is a senior member of IEEE and a fellow of ASNT.

Nondestructive testing comprises a wide variety of technologies used to determine the integrity of materials and structures without impairing their future usefulness. The field has become increasingly important in manufacturing innovations, smart materials and structures, AI-enabled NDE 4.0.

Deng will be inducted in the 2021 Fellow Class during the awards banquet at the ASNT annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in November.
