Remembering George VanDusen

Retired assistant dean and college leader dies at 85

George VanDusen

A retired assistant dean and former interim dean of the MSU College of Engineering has died in Florida.

George VanDusen, who served as the assistant dean for undergraduate affairs for many years and as interim dean in 1998-1999, died June 1 at McGraw Community Hospice in Jacksonville. He was 85.

Engineering Dean Leo Kempel said VanDusen is warmly remembered for his dedication and friendly manner.

"George was a giant in the college," he said. "He helped guide the education of thousands of Spartans. He lived a life of service to others and will be remembered fondly by all Spartan Engineers," Kempel added.

VanDusen is credited with developing the college's Engineering Equal Opportunity Program (now Diversity Programs), Women in Engineering, The Engineering Arts Program (now Applied Engineering Sciences), and the High School Engineering Institute.

A memorial service is planned at First Christian Church of the Beaches in Neptune Beach, Florida, on Saturday, June 26.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Michigan State University. Include the George M. and Gloria R. VanDusen Endowed Engineering Scholarship on the memo line and mail the gift to MSU University Advancement, 535 Chestnut Road, Room 300, East Lansing, MI, 48824
