MSU's 11th Programming Competition showcases Michigan talent
Michigan State University hosted the 11th Annual Programming Competition on Saturday, March 18, for 130 high school students on 50 teams from around Michigan.
Computer Science and Engineering Professor of Instruction Josh Nahum again served as the primary organizer for the computer science contest. Teams of three in grades 9-12 worked together primarily using the Java and Python programming languages.
“Josh worked tirelessly preparing for this event and coaching MSU students to come up with questions and solutions for the contest. He ran a smooth competition,” said Teresa Isela VanderSloot, director of Women in Engineering, Recruitment and K-12 Outreach. “We couldn't offer it without his help and expertise.”
MSU student volunteers were also key to the success of the competition, said Computer Science and Engineering Professor Emeritus Laura Dillon. The student mentors included Judy Effendi, Arnav Deol, Joel Martinez, Muhan Luo, Morghane McAnelly, Navya Bhwardwaj, Tatiana Voeger, Grace Park, Benjamin Harrison, and Lemuel Mensah.
Continuing the winning legacy from the Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center were Team Silver Smiths, who won first place in the Experienced Category. Members are Lucas Oeming, Levi Scranton, and Aryaman Mishra.
Taking first place in the Novice Category was the team of DeMarcus Franklin, Victor Monnier, and Sam Koliner from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor.
The event was sponsored by MSU’s College of Engineering Broadening Participation K-12 Programs.
