Haider receives ASCE recognition for pavement expertise
An associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Michigan State University has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Syed Waqar Haider is being honored for his contributions to the field of civil engineering. The citation reads: "Dr. Haider has over 30 years of diverse professional, research, outreach, and teaching experience developing state-of-the-art methods and practical applications in statistical quality assurance process, material characterization, pavement performance modeling and analysis, asset management systems, and preservation."
ASCE confers the Fellow grade in recognition of outstanding engineering achievements. The prestigious honor is only held by 3 percent of the 150,000 ASCE members. Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation's oldest engineering society.
Haider's research interests include pavement material characterization, preservation, performance modeling, management, and rehabilitation. His current research has focused on mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis, design, and improved highway infrastructure sustainability and service lives.
His work studies the effectiveness of pavement preservation treatments and the development of performance-related specifications & statistical quality control assurances.
Haider and his students have received numerous national recognitions for research in pavement performance. Studies under the direction of Haider received awards during the Long-Term Infrastructure Performance (LTIP) Student Data Analysis Contest (Pavement). The competition is a joint effort of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and ASCE.
He earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering at MSU, specializing in pavements and materials.
