Michigan State University’s College of Engineering and its corporate partners recognized more than 160 students Tuesday, Feb. 20 for their academic achievements and participation in college activities and programming.
The annual event called The Dean’s Showcase of Stars took place inside the Spartan Stadium Club and honored students with more than $150,000 in scholarships. It also created opportunities to network with potential employers.
MSU College of Engineering Dean Leo Kempel thanked the corporate partners who supported the event and scholarships. He also encouraged students to stay involved in career networking opportunities on and off campus as the college continues to expand its offerings and see its enrollment grow.
“These are great times for our students, for our faculty and for our entire community,” Kempel said.
Corporate partners that funded scholarships are:
- Auto-Owners Insurance
- Boeing
- Consumers Energy
- General Motors
- Marathon
- PPG
- Rocket Companies
- TechSmith
- Tesla
- Ultium Cells
In addition to corporate-funded scholarships, The Dean’s Showcase of Stars offered these alumni-funded scholarships:
- P.U.S.H. Scholarship (Providing for Undergraduate Students facing Hardship)
- Professor Kun-Mu Chen Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Kun-Mu Chen Memorial Endowed Scholarship was added to the event this year and is named after a distinguished electrical engineer. Chen spent more than 40 years teaching at the College of Engineering before his retirement in 2000.
Elizabeth Burbatt, director of First-generation Student Initiatives, said the college created the Dean’s Showcase of Stars several years ago to recognize students of various experiences and backgrounds.
Close to 200 students applied to be among the more than 160 who received scholarships at this year’s event.
“We know GPA isn’t always reflective of effort,” Burbatt said. “Students can come in and have leadership roles, work full-time and be taking classes on top of that. We want them to apply for these scholarships and know there’s an opportunity to get them.
“They aren’t just going to 4.0 students who aren’t engaging with programming and efforts on campus.”
