MSU Engineering honors nine for significant accomplishments

Eight distinguished alumni of the Michigan State University College of Engineering were honored with 2025 Alumni Awards on Saturday, May 3, at MSU’s Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. MSU Engineering also recognized a high school educator whose noteworthy efforts to teach technical education and computer science reflect positively on MSU and the College of Engineering.

The 2025 College of Engineering Alumni Award winners were celebrated on May 3, 2025 at the Kellogg Hotel and Center.

Interim Engineering Dean John Papapolymerou said the annual event is a celebration of select graduates for their outstanding professional and personal accomplishments. Awards are presented each spring in East Lansing.

“These world-class alumni are living examples of how Spartan Engineers improve our communities and world every day,” Papapolymerou said. “We extend our sincere congratulations to each of them and celebrate their accomplishments and impact.” 

The Claud R. Erickson Distinguished Alumni Award

Receiving this year’s Claud R. Erickson Distinguished Alumni Award was David A. Pahl, vice president and head of Investor Relations at Texas Instruments (TI), where he oversees communications with TI’s investor community. He is a 1986 electrical engineering graduate and has more than 38 years of TI experience.

The Erickson Award is the highest alumni honor presented by the college. It recognizes professional accomplishment, volunteer service, and distinguished service to the college and the engineering profession.

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

  • Truman C. Surbrook, P.E., B.S., 1965; M.S. 1969; Ph.D., 1977, agricultural engineering

Red Cedar Circle Award in Chemical Engineering and Materials Sciences

  • Martin Toomajian, P.E., M.S., 1991, chemical engineering

Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

  • Bradley C. Wieferich, P.E., B.S., 1992, civil engineering

Computer Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

  • Jaya Ramanathan, Ph.D., 1992, computer science

John D. Ryder Electrical and Computer Engineering Alumni Award

  • William G. Scott, B.S., 1968, electrical engineering

Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award

  • Brad W. Kruchten, B.S., 1982, mechanical engineering

Green Apple Teaching Award

  • Jennifer Krengielski
