Getting to Know – Jeffrey Tsang

Inspiring opportunities for student success

During his academic career, Jeffrey Tsang was inspired by the positive experiences he had with advisors, both as an undergraduate and graduate student. Over the last eight years, Tsang has worked to pay that forward as a proud member of the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Engineering advising team.

“[My academic advisors] definitely informed the way I advise students,” said Tsang.

Tsang, assistant director for advising initiatives, oversees part of the advising team, new student orientation, and education abroad. In that role, he strives to help students build a connection with the university and create a welcoming environment.

“I believe that an advising relationship is a two-way street and that it involves giving from both the advisor and advisee.”

Tsang manages the education abroad options offered by the College of Engineering, including faculty-led, exchange, and direct enroll programs. He is also responsible for maintaining relationships with program providers and exchange partners, making him an integral part of the education abroad process.

“In this position, I have the opportunity to develop new programs to fit the needs of our ever-changing student population,” he said.

One of those new programs is the first semester-long opportunity that lets incoming students begin their college experience abroad. Students will kick off their first year immersed in a new and exciting culture.

Tsang believes education abroad is an enriching experience that expands students’ horizons and prepares them to move through the world. “A critical skill gained during education abroad is intercultural communication,” said Tsang. “In this increasingly interconnected world, it is important for us to prepare our future global Spartan engineers.”

For his efforts in this area, Tsang received the MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Education Abroad during the 2025 MSU International Awards on April 17.

“My career is focused on helping students through college and giving them opportunities to succeed,” said Tsang. “I want engineering students to be able to have all the experiences and tools they need to become successful engineers.”
