Mission

We develop practice-ready engineers and computer scientists, solve complex transdisciplinary problems, and drive economic development - both locally and globally - through innovative and engaging teaching, groundbreaking research, and socially conscious service within a culturally rich, intellectually open, and intentionally inclusive environment.

Vision

We will be recognized as leaders in solving global problems and driving economic development.

Strategic Goals 2023-2028

Research

We will strategically invest in key areas of strength and leverage these strengths to shape national and global research priorities.

  • Objective 1: Promote synergies across departments and colleges to address transdisciplinary, global, and high-impact problems aligned with MSU’s Strategic Plan.
    • Key Progress Measure: Increase total and cross-college research expenditures by 50%.
  • Objective 2: Improve our infrastructure and increase resources to effectively conduct research.
    • Key Progress Measures: Implement the Space and Facilities Strategic Plan and utilize a return-on-investment model to guide key decision-making.
  • Objective 3: Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain high-quality faculty, staff, and students aligned with our land-grant mission.
    • Key Progress Measures: Tenure-system hiring of net 70 new faculty lines, additional teaching staff to meet enrollment growth, and a 15% increase in support staff.

Education

We will enhance our educational ecosystem to drive student preparation, persistence, and success.

  • Objective 1: Invest in student success beyond the classroom.
    • Key Progress Measure: All undergraduate students will have completed an experiential learning opportunity, such as a co-op, internship, education abroad experience, or undergraduate research opportunity. Half of these students will engage in at least two such experiences.
  • Objective 2: Educate the next generation for a rapidly changing and globally connected world.
    • Key Progress Measure: Create opportunities for all students to engage in meaningful experiences- through innovative and engaging teaching, groundbreaking research, and socially conscious service within a culturally rich, intellectually open, and intentionally inclusive environment.
  • Objective 3: Invest in teaching and learning strategies that establish a foundation for success and continue to support and engage students through graduation.
    • Key Progress Measure: We will develop and assess programs that incentivize and reward excellence in the classroom. We will double participation in the ESSA program.

Outreach and Engagement

We will increase our impact through effective engagement with internal and external partners and collaborators.

  • Objective 1: Establish a strategic focus on outreach and engagement when promoting the College of Engineering’s talent.
    • Key Progress Measure: We will increase the annual number of All-University Awards received by members of the college by 20% and develop formal mechanisms across the College to identify and nominate faculty, staff, and students for prestigious awards both internal and external to the university.
  • Objective 2: Strengthen collaboration with external partners.
    • Key Progress Measure: We will increase the frequency of industrial collaborations and develop innovative models for engaging these partners in both educational and research settings.
