As all types of engineers design parts, systems, or processes based upon physical matter (stuff), understanding how matter can be rearranged to make and modify useful materials is valuable for any kind of engineer. Thus, knowledge of materials can enhance any other engineering degree.
For this reason, many students may wish to complete a minor in Materials Science and Engineering to deepen their ability to make intelligent choices about selecting materials or processing strategies to enhance material properties. This can also help them know what kinds of expertise is available to modify or optimize materials needed for a particular design or system.
The MSE minor requires completion of 18 credits of Materials Science and Engineering coursework. Through consultation with their major advisor, students may be able to overlap some of these courses with their major requirement.
