Two Spartan Engineers have been nominated for the national Goldwater Scholarship, considered by many to be the most prestigious award bestowed on undergraduates studying the sciences and engineering in the United States.
Andrew McDonald and Andrew Norfleet were nominated by MSU for the scholarship competition that seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields. The scholarship provides undergraduate tuition and living expenses.
MSU's nominees for the Goldwater Scholarship are:
- Andrew McDonald, an Honors College junior majoring in computer science in the College of Engineering, and statistics and advanced mathematics in the College of Natural Science. McDonald's career goal is to pursue a Ph.D. to advance the frontiers of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). "Specifically, I intend to apply ML and AI in the global fight against climate change," McDonald said.
- Andrew Norfleet, an Honors College junior majoring in chemical engineering in the College of Engineering, and chemistry in the College of Natural Science. Norfleet's career goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in chemical engineering. He hopes to apply that knowledge to academic research in green chemistry, with a focus on process engineering and energy efficiency, he said.
In all, MSU has five finalists and six nominees for prestigious scholarships and research posts this year. Read more at: MSUToday.
