#1 ranking in world

Anil Jain again tops H-index ranking for computer science

A Michigan State University researcher in the College of Engineering has again been recognized for the world's top H-index ranking for computer science and electronics.

Anil Jain is an international expert in pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision, and biometrics.

According to Guide2Research, University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Anil K. Jain is ranked #1 in both the world and the United States in the 2021 edition of Top Scientists Ranking for Computer Science & Electronics.

Guide2Research is a leading portal for the exploration and analysis of computer science.

Jain's H-index is 197 and has 224,608 citations, based on a detailed examination of 6300 profiles on Google Scholar and DBLP (a computer science bibliography website). The H-index is a measure of scientific research impact.

Abdol-Hossein Esfahanian, chairperson of the MSU Department of Computer Science and Engineering, called the #1 ranking a formidable achievement.

"It is fantastic to see Professor Jain on the top of H-index mountain, but it is not surprising from someone who is a world-class researcher and visionary," Esfahanian said. "Professor Jain's continued achievements bring deserving attention and recognition to our department and MSU. We are fortunate to have him as a colleague."

Jain's former MSU students say they are not surprised with the "spectacular" academic accomplishments he is achieving:

  • Serhat Selcuk Bucak, software engineer, Perception, Waymo (Ph.D., computer science, 2014): "Despite having amazing achievements and being a big star in the research community, Dr. Jain is very humble and still works hard as if he has a lot to prove. In addition to leading by example, he always finds time to help his students, making us feel blessed and proud to have studied under his tutelage."
  • Brendan Klare, chief scientist, president and co-founder, RankOne (Ph.D., computer science, 2012): "Professor Jain's achievement as the world's highest ranking computer scientist by research publication impact only begins to tell the story of his broader impact to the research community and world. The impact he has made on operational technology, both directly through his research and technology transfers, as well as indirectly through his students' achievements at some of the most important organizations in the world, further underscore that he is arguably the most important computer science researcher and matriculator of minds in the world over the past 50 years."
  • Sharath Pankanti, principal scientist, Microsoft (Ph.D., computer science, 1995): "I am really fortunate to have Professor Jain as my adviser. Besides his keen scientific insights and almost messianic zeal for practical impact, I truly appreciate his unassuming manner and kindness that helps as well as inspires everyone, especially, his students."

Jain is an internationally recognized expert in pattern recognition, machine learning, computer vision, and biometrics recognition. He directs MSU's Biometrics Research Group.

He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE), foreign member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), a member of The World Academy of Science (TWAS) and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Spain's most-read newspaper, El Pais, featured Anil Jain after he was presented an honorary degree by the Autonomous University of Madrid in recognition of 50 years of advancing pattern recognition.

Jain was a member of the U.S. Defense Science Board and Forensics Science Standards Board. His prizes include Guggenheim, Humboldt, Fulbright, and King-Sun Fu Prize. For advancing pattern recognition, he was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

He was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, the most prestigious journal in computer vision (2019 Impact Factor = 17.86). Jain has been assigned eight U.S. and Korean patents and is active in technology transfer for which he was elected to the National Academy of Inventors. His list of publications is available at Google Scholar.
