Getting to Know: Nestor DeOcampo

MSU Engineering welcomes new director of facilities and planning

Nestor DeOcampo joined the College of Engineering as its new Director of Facilities and Planning, effective Nov. 1, 2021.

As the first to fill the new leadership role, he brings a blend of experience and education that uniquely positions him to focus on strategic operational planning and management for multiple College of Engineering buildings and operations.

DeOcampo joins the college from MSU's Infrastructure Planning and Facilities team, where he led efforts on MSU's beautiful new STEM Teaching and Learning Facility.

His responsibilities within the college will include:

  • leading efforts for facilities strategic planning including development of proposals for new buildings,
  • coordinating space allocation, usage and renovation,
  • development and oversight of policies and procedures involving space and facilities,
  • facilitating rapid resolution of space and facilities issues, and
  • working collaboratively with all Engineering units, along with a variety of special projects.

He began his collegiate career by specializing in biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received an advanced degree in genetics from MSU and went on to become an NIH Fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He returned to MSU as an assistant professor in the Department of Zoology (now Integrative Biology), where he served as the instructor of record for nearly 5,000 students.

He was also faculty liaison to multiple renovation projects, which included budget oversight and design. It led to his recent service as the administrative capital project liaison for the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility and Shaw Lane Power Plant Renovation.
