EGR X is a one credit course designed to enhance a student's experiential education work term by simulating opportunities for non-technical aspects of professional development and assessment of expectations. In addition, student will be guided through an in depth appraisal of their post-graduation professional options. Students will be held to a high standard of accountability and professional ideals. Position must fall within college’s guidelines for approval. Any on-campus position must be pre-approved. Contact Dr. Bernadette Friedrich (Dr. B) (friedric@egr.msu.edu).
In order to get credit for an experience students must be working in the position during the semester that you are enrolled in EGR X. You can not get credit for a internship/co-op after the experiences has ended.

Engineering Experiential Education I
For students participating in their 1st work term. Areas of focus are based on the student’s individual technical position and include professional communication, establishing expectations, and learning from failures.

Engineering Experiential Education II
For students participating in their 2nd work term. Areas of focus are based on the student’s technical position and include goal setting, being mindful for professional success, and understanding inclusive excellence.

Advanced Engineering Experiential Education I
For students participating in their 3rd work term. Areas of focus are based on the student’s technical position and include professional ethics, economics and lifelong learning.
EGR 494
Advanced Engineering Experiential Education II
For students participating in their 4th or 5th work term. Areas of focus are based on the student’s technical position and include project management, work life balance, and value propositions.

Cooperative Education Certificate
If a student takes and passes EGR X for three semesters they will receive a notation on their transcript that indicates a “Certificate in Cooperative Engineering Education”
Elective and Major Credit
The following majors have created a “waiver” for an elective for any student who completes three experiential education courses: Biosystems, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Materials Science. Requirements vary depending on department, please discuss your options with your academic advisor. EGR 193 does not count towards this waiver for any department.
Honors Option
Honors Option for EGR X is only available for students in EGR 392, 493, 494. Request must be submitted by week two of Semester.

Financial Considerations
It is our intent to ensure that enrollment in EGR X does not financially penalize the student. For any full-time student who is taking between 12 and 18 credits your tuition for this course is included in your block tuition. Students outside of block tuition in any of the experiential education courses will receive a tuition waiver that covers the cost of tuition for the EGR X course only. All students regardless of credits will receive a waiver for half of any engineering fee applied for the semester of enrollment. All financial waivers are specific to active enrollment in an EGR X course.
Supervisor Communications
Please note that as a registered participant in EGR X, you are required to provide the name and contact information for your work site supervisor. During the course of the semester your supervisor will be contacted to complete an evaluation of your work place performance, based on ABET Accreditation Outcomes.

The goal of the experiential education course is to guide, support, expose, inform MSU Engineering students while they are working applying classroom theory to real world problems. Methods of instruction include readings, reflections, and real time activities.
Course is hosted primarily in D2L, with two small assignments in Handshake.
EGR X is always a one-credit course.
EGR 193, 391, 392, 493, and 494 can only be taken once. Additional enrollments must be pre-approved by the instructor. EGR 893 and 993 can be taken up to 3 times.

There is no additional cost to take EGR X. For full-time students enrolled in 12–18 credits, the tuition for this course is already included in your block tuition. Students who are not covered by block tuition and are enrolled in experiential education courses will receive a tuition waiver that fully covers the EGR X tuition. In addition, all students—regardless of credit load—will receive a waiver for half of the engineering fee for the semester in which they are enrolled.
EGR X is a pass/no pass course. There is no impact on your GPA. You need to achieve and 80% in the course to pass.
Be patient! Yes you will automatically get the tuition waiver, but the process is not automatic. Tuition waiver are usually processed Monday morning for the three weeks prior to the first bill due date, and then weekly after that until the second week of the semester.
Yes, you are considered a full time student by MSU.

Yes, this is an experiential education course, so you must have a paid, career-related, supervised position. (Any exceptions must be pre-approved.)
A one credit course usually means 3 hours per week outside of class. Since we don’t actually meet, I would suggest that no more than 2 hours per week for the course.
Yes, but once you purchase the text you can use it for the entire series of EGR X courses. Text cost is less than $45 when purchased through the publisher.
