Scholarships and financial resources

First-year applicants

Scholarship decisions for first-year students are based upon your MSU application, academic merit and financial need. There is no separate scholarship application. Michigan State University and the College of Engineering will automatically review your eligibility when you apply, and scholarship offers will be made during the first week of April.

Visit MSU first-year scholarships for information on university-awarded scholarships.

Additionally, each year the College of Engineering offers more than 150 scholarships totaling approximately $300,000 to incoming first-year and transfer students. Individual scholarships range from $1,000 to $8,500. Academic excellence is the primary criterion with financial need considered for some awards. For the past several years, incoming first-year scholarships were offered to students with minimum 32 or higher ACT composite or 1460 SAT, and 3.8 or higher HS GPA, with financial need.

Current undergraduate students

Our Engineering Scholarships for the 2025-26 academic year are NOW OPEN. The engineering conditional application will close on March 1, 2025, at 11:59 pm! You must apply on MSU Scholarships and complete both the general and conditional applications to be eligible. Also, if you receive a renewable scholarship you are encouraged to reapply for all engineering renewable scholarships. If you have any questions, please reach out to the engineering scholarship team: scholarships@egr.msu.edu.

Note: All scholarships are contingent upon eligibility and continuing availability of funds.

University and college scholarships

Returning students, including current first-year students, who wish to be considered for general or discipline-based engineering scholarships must complete the MSU scholarship application. Students must fill out and submit both the general and College of Engineering applications to be considered for engineering scholarships. Also, please submit a FAFSA even if you think your income exceeds the limits.

The following guidelines govern the scholarship selection process:

  1. Academic excellence is the primary criterion, but financial need is considered for some awards. Other awards are based on extracurricular activities, community service, co-op and other work experience, membership in professional and honor societies, career interests, and other relevant information. The one-page resume that you attach to your application should reflect these accomplishments.
  2. Applicants must be full-time students, taking a minimum of 12 credits during the semester(s) in which the scholarship will be awarded.
  3. You must be already admitted to the college of engineering or have a Combination GPA generally requiring a minimum GPA of 3.0. See Undergraduate admissions
  4. New students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at MSU at the end of Fall Semester.
  5. Scholarships are generally not awarded for internship or co-op semesters.

College Undergraduate Awards and Financial Aid Committee

The following faculty members represent their departments on the Undergraduate Awards and Financial Aid Committee. This committee meets at the end of the spring semester to determine scholarship awards and allocate funds for the upcoming academic year. Students will be notified of the outcome of the status of their applications by July.

Any questions regarding your scholarships please email Alicia Heeney at scholarships@egr.msu.edu.
