Energy and sustainable engineering is essential for supporting the improvement of civil infrastructure systems due to the increasing impact of climate change, demands of urbanization, and the need for resource efficiency. As populations grow and cities expand, there is a greater need for resilient infrastructure that can support these changes while minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, the finite nature of natural resources requires a shift towards more sustainable infrastructure practices, including energy-efficient design, use of renewable energy sources, and sustainable materials. By integrating energy and sustainability principles into civil infrastructure systems, engineers can create infrastructure that meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The energy and sustainability focus area in civil engineering is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to address the challenges of sustainable infrastructure development. This program integrates principles of civil engineering with a focus on renewable energy, environmental conservation, innovative use of recycled and waste materials, and sustainable practices. Students learn about sustainable construction materials, green building design and operation, sustainable transportation systems, and renewable energy systems. They also explore concepts related to life cycle assessment, energy efficiency, smart buildings systems, among others.

The safe, efficient, and sustainable movement of persons and goods is critical to the economy and our quality of life. Transportation systems play a critical role in facilitating this mobility and the transportation engineering program at MSU is focused on the planning, design, operation, and management of these systems. Faculty research focuses on improving our understanding of the interactions between road users and the transportation environment, leveraging MSU’s unique 5,200-acre campus, which serves as a connected ecosystem to drive mobility research and development.
