A retired University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University has been honored for lifetime achievements by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Hassan K. Khalil was presented the 2025 ASME Rufus Oldenburger Medal - the highest honor presented by ASME in the field of automatic control - during the ASME Modeling, Estimation and Control Conference in October in Pittsburgh, Penn.
Khalil is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE).
Nelson Sepúlveda Alancastro, professor and interim ECE chair, said Khalil’s decades of work put MSU on “the national and global map” in theoretical controls.
“He brought rigor in design to generations of Spartan Engineers and literally wrote the authoritative book that is used by countless students globally. He is a steady source of counsel, willing to help colleagues through many challenges and celebrating many successes. He is a man of faith who demonstrated to those privileged to know him how to be a person for others,” he added.
Khalil joined MSU in 1978 and retired in 2020. He is an award-winning faculty member with honors including the Teacher Scholar Award, Distinguished Faculty Award, and a 2020 Withrow Teaching Excellence Award. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control.
