April 1st marked the launch of the 14th annual Science Festival hosted by Michigan State University. People of all ages are invited to attend free events held on sites throughout the state and on MSU’s campus that explore science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).
STEAM Expo Days will take place on Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th, giving attendees the chance to explore more than 100 hands-on activities, talks and demonstrations.
Engineering-related events will offer a wide range of experiences, from experimenting with supercomputers to learning about animals at Potter Park Zoo. One event aimed at younger audiences is Oozing Oobleck: Fun With Biological Materials, a hands-0n activity that allows children to test how different starches affect Oobleck’s texture and its reaction to force.
The festival also offers opportunities to hear directly from university researchers. On April 18th, several biosystems and agricultural engineering professors from the College of Engineering will host Engineering Smart Agricultural Systems: Tractors, Sensors, Robots, and More!. a presentation highlighting research advances in smart agriculture. Visitors will be able to explore autonomous smart weeding tractors, precision irrigation systems and real-time farm monitoring using ground vehicles, drones and satellite networks.
