Faculty and students from Michigan State University’s Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering brought research, leadership and student innovation to the 2026 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers Annual International Meeting.
More than 70 Spartans attended the July 12-15 meeting in Indianapolis, delivering more than 60 technical presentations, serving on technical and leadership committees, councils and boards, and competing in research, design and robotics competitions.
The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, or BAE, is jointly administered by the MSU College of Engineering and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Its faculty and students apply engineering and biological principles to challenges involving food, the environment, energy, and health.
The ASABE Annual International Meeting brings agricultural and biological engineers from across the United States and around the world together to share research, explore emerging technologies and advance the profession.
Student research and design recognized
Spartan students and teams earned recognition across several competitions and programs during the meeting.
- Alpha Epsilon Chapter: MSU’s Alpha Epsilon chapter received the New Project Seed Money Award, supporting the continued growth of the organization and its impact on students and programs within BAE.
- Macy Schafer : Schafer earned third place in the Boyd-Scott M.S. Research Competition.
- MSU BAE Ag Robotics Team: The team placed fifth among 15 teams in the robotics competition.
- Biosystems Engineering senior design team: A student bioretention project team advanced as a finalist in the ASABE Gunlogson Environmental Design Competition and earned third place.
- Boyang Deng : The Biosystems Engineering doctoral candidate received the 2026 Graduate Scholarly Achievement Award from the Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological, and Food Engineers.
Faculty earn honors
BAE faculty members also received recognition during the meeting.
Assistant Professor Ehsan Ghane received an Outstanding Reviewer Award. Ghane’s research and Extension work focuses on agricultural water management systems and water quality.
Assistant Professor Yuzhen Lu received a Superior Paper Award. Lu’s research focuses on sensing, automation and robotics technologies for smart agriculture and food systems.
From technical presentations and professional leadership to student competitions and faculty recognition, MSU’s presence at the annual meeting highlighted the breadth of research, education and innovation underway in biosystems and agricultural engineering.
