Biography

Cheri X. Deng, Ph.D.
Cheri Deng earned a B.S. in Physics (1985) and an M.S. in Acoustics (1988) from Nanjing University, China, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University (1995). She was a research scientist at Riverside Research Institute, New York (1995–2002), and an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (2002–2006). Dr. Deng joined the University of Michigan in 2007, became Professor of Biomedical Engineering in 2013, and directed the department’s M.S. program in 2024–2025.

Her laboratory investigates biomedical ultrasound—from fundamental tissue–ultrasound interactions to translational technologies for imaging, drug and gene delivery, mechanobiology, stem-cell engineering, and tissue regeneration.

Within the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, she has served on undergraduate and graduate curriculum, admissions, and curriculum committees while mentoring numerous graduate and undergraduate researchers and teaching courses at both levels.

Dr. Deng served on the UM College of Engineering Executive Committee (2022-2-25), advising the Dean on strategic planning, faculty affairs, and academic policy.
