Atoms, the fundamental building blocks of everything in nature, are both ubiquitous and mysterious. As such, advances in energy, material science and medicine rely on solving the mysteries of how the behavior of atoms changes in the presence of nuclear, chemical and electromagnetic forces. A research program headed by Metin Aktulga develops advanced simulation software for tracking matter atom by atom that’s fast, accurate and reliable enough to serve as a tool for scientific discovery.

Michigan State University in East Lansing is working with two other universities to develop a freshwater recovery system to extract clean irrigation water from hydraulic fracking wastewater. The reclaimed water could help western states that need it for crops and livestock. Investigators are Andre Benard, working with James Klausner, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
An assistant professor at Michigan State University will use a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award to develop novel algorithms and software to help computational scientists and big data researchers pare down the challenges of performing large-scale computations on massively parallel computer systems.
