Biography
Laura Dillon served on the faculty of the University of California Santa Barbara for 12 years before joining MSU in 1997. An ACM Distinguished Scientist, Laura’s research centered on formal methods in software engineering. She previously served on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering and ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology. She was Vice Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group in Software Engineering and chaired several top software engineering research conferences.
A champion of broadening participation in computing throughout her career, Laura was a founding co-advisor of MSU Women in Computing, Chair of the first Michigan Celebration of Women in Computing, Program Co-Chair of the 2011 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC), and General Co-Chair of GHC 2012. She served two years as a Co-Chair of the Anita Borg Institute Advisory Board and three years as a member of the NCWIT Academic Alliance Executive Committee. She continues working with CSE to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility of its programs as Chair of the CSE DEIA Steering Committee.

Annual high school programming contest showcases Michigan talent
Michigan State University recently hosted the 14th Annual Programming Competition for 10 teams of high school students from around Michigan. Students from East Lansing High School, Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Midland High School and the St. Clair County Technical Education Center came to the Engineering Building to compete in novice and experienced programming categories.
Technovation: Coding for all
Coding for all is a goal of Spartan Engineers at Michigan State University. For the past 15 years, MSU has hosted a computer science community outreach program, one of them is called the Technovation Coding Club. Technovation is a student-led effort that introduces 6-12th grade students to computer science using games, mini-projects, and team-building activities.

National Goldwater Scholar
A computer science undergraduate student in the MSU College of Engineering has been named the recipient of the nationally competitive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. MSU has produced a total of 49 Goldwater Scholars.
Virtual ceremony celebrates AiC
The first-ever virtual award ceremony honoring NCWIT Aspirations in Computing (AiC) Award recipients from Michigan recently recognized some of the state's most talented young women with computer-related interests.

Michigan State University in East Lansing is working with two other universities to develop a freshwater recovery system to extract clean irrigation water from hydraulic fracking wastewater. The reclaimed water could help western states that need it for crops and livestock. Investigators are Andre Benard, working with James Klausner, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The race is on to create cheap materials to store energy for the U.S power grid, said Mechanical Engineering Department Chair James Klausner. MSU is sharing a $2 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). "We think we can return electricity to the grid at less than 5 cents per kilowatt hour," he said.

The MSU Innovation of the Year Award was presented to Donald Morelli, chair and professor of chemical engineering and materials science, for his work in thermoelectric technology.

Engineers have been working for years to develop a more convenient way to monitor blood pressure. Now, researchers at MSU and the University of Maryland appear to have succeeded. Research led by senior author Ramakrishna Mukkamala, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has devised a smart way to detect hypertension sooner with a new blood pressure app. Anand Chandrasekhar, electrical and computer engineering doctoral student, is the lead author.

The Michigan State University College of Engineering celebrated teaching, scholarship, and service during the 28th Annual Engineering Awards Luncheon in the University Club on Thursday, March 15. Eleven faculty and staff members were honored.

Year of Global Africa
With African music, dancing and colorful visuals, the Spartan Marching Band will celebrate Michigan State University's decades-long scholarly engagement with Africa during its halftime show on Saturday, Nov. 18, when MSU plays Maryland in football. The show was originally scheduled for the Penn State game on Saturday, Nov. 4 - but a 3 1/2-hour game delay due to lightning caused the schedule change.
