First-Year Engineering CoRe Experience
The Cornerstone Engineering and Residential Experience (CoRe) at Michigan State University provides academic and professional resources as well as co-curricular activities for first-year engineering students. What makes MSU’s First-Year Engineering special is the emphasis on the Living Learning Community in South Neighborhood. Incoming first-year students who select an engineering major preference are automatically considered part of the CoRe Experience.
Education Abroad
The College of Engineering offers a broad selection of education abroad programs specifically designed for selected majors in order to assure academic success. When you apply to Michigan State University, you are applying to the university in general, not to a specific program. MSU allows all incoming undergraduate students to declare a major in whatever they wish. Once you are enrolled at MSU, each college has different requirements to be admitted to their programs.

Prerequisite courses for the College of Engineering include the following:
- WRA 101 or 150
- CEM 141 and CEM 161 (Except for Computer Science Majors)
- EGR 102 or CSE 231 for Computer Engineering or Computer Science Majors; CSE 220 for Electrical Engineers, or CMSE 202 for Computational Data Science Majors
- MTH 132
- MTH 133
- PHY 183
We encourage you to take as many math and science classes as you can. Our incoming first-years have a 3.0 – 3.5 minimum GPA in technical courses, depending on which major they choose. For more information on university admissions, visit First-year Admission criteria.
