The Michigan State University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) welcomed Cheri Deng as its new department chairperson and the Tom and Lupe Izzo Endowed Professor of Biomedical Engineering on July 1.
She comes to MSU from the University of Michigan, where she was a professor of biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering.
Interim Dean and MSU Research Foundation Professor John Papapolymerou said the Spartan Engineering community is pleased to welcome her to its world-class faculty and leadership team.
“Her dedication to develop novel technologies for biomedical and practical health applications are strong indicators that her leadership will be far-reaching and a significant addition to our campus community,” he added.
“I am honored to lead our BME department. In my first year I will focus on re-energizing our faculty, students, and staff; fostering collaborative, high-impact research both within the department and with external partners; enhancing our operational efficiency; and strengthening our sense of community,” said Deng. “What excites me most about biomedical engineering today is its ever-growing interdisciplinarity and translational reach, coupled with the unprecedented power of AI to accelerate discovery, design, and education.”
Deng’s research focuses on the ultrasound interaction with materials, tissues, and cells. Her contributions are interdisciplinary and include the technique of sonoporation for drug and gene delivery, stem cell differentiation, quantitative ultrasound imaging, technologies for mechanobiology and tissue engineering applications.
She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Her leadership experiences at the University of Michigan included advising the engineering dean on strategic planning, faculty affairs, and academic policy.
Deng earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in acoustics from Nanjing University in China and her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Yale University.
