Assistant Professor
Biography
Dr. Alyssa Ryan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She has more than seven years of experience in the following subject areas: transportation safety, equity in transportation, human factors, driving simulation, public health applications, behavioral modeling, traffic operations, and the use of emerging technologies in transportation systems. She has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed journal publications and 70+ conference presentations, supported by more than $3.4 million in funding as PI, co-PI, or key personnel. She has contributed to interdisciplinary research efforts focused on transportation safety, driver behavior, and the integration of artificial intelligence into data-driven transportation systems. She has contributed to building a collaborative driving simulator research group, leading projects funded by the Arizona Department of Transportation, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program. She has contributed to national professional service through active roles in the Transportation Research Board as a member of the Women and Gender in Transportation Standing Committee (AME20) and of the Road User Measurement and Evaluation Standing Committee (ACH50). She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Education Council and Chair of the ITE Equity Committee. She has contributed to other mentorship and leadership within the academic and professional communities, including with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Recently, she was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Younger Member Award from the Transportation & Development Institute of ASCE.
