A new U.S. – Ireland research partnership, led by electrical engineering professors at Michigan State University, will work to improve wireless communications through location-specific “communications pockets” for more private, secure and efficient wireless communications. The project has the potential to improve next-generation wireless systems, like 5G and 6G.

Five from the College of Engineering have received among the highest honors presented to faculty members at Michigan State University. The awards recognize outstanding faculty members for research that enhances MSU’s intellectual prominence nationally and globally.

The Michigan State University College of Engineering recognizes 19 faculty and staff members with awards for their excellence in service and distinguished contributions. Faculty and staff members are nominated each year by their colleagues, industry peers and students for the most prestigious honors the college offers.

Two researchers from Michigan State University will design and implement scalable wireless systems to track and detect motion in people – assisting in diagnosing movement disorders and alerting caregivers of elderly falls in real time.

Bryan Smith, associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has created a noninvasive process to deliver chemotherapy treatments that could help doctors see how much of the drug is going directly to the tumor.

Several important college leadership positions were established in 2018 -Yue Qi was chosen as Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity; Theo Caldwell was named Assistant Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity; and Katy Colbry was appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Services. Tim Hinds took over as Director of the First-Year Engineering CoRe program; Kyle Foster was promoted to Director of the Diversity Programs Office (DPO); and MSU Foundation Professor Yunhao Liu was named Chairperson Designee of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

MSU's plans to construct a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics facility in its 1940s power plant got national media notice, including ASEE FIRST Bell. MSU is spending nearly $100 million to renovate the former Shaw Lane power plant.

Engineers have been working for years to develop a more convenient way to monitor blood pressure. Now, researchers at MSU and the University of Maryland appear to have succeeded.

The winter holidays are a time for both celebration and reflection. As 2017 draws to a close, we have much to celebrate and a tremendous future to look forward to in the College of Engineering. As always, our progress is only made possible by the tremendous support and dedication that each of you have shown throughout the past year.
