May's media highlights for the Michigan State University College of Engineering include the naming of a new department head, and ongoing national coverage on biometrics expert Anil Jain, a University Distinguished Professor of computer science and engineering.   • Sophia Lunt, who recently joined the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science as an adjunct professor, has the most watched (almost 35,000 views) among the MSU TEDx lectures. Watch her video: Cancer cells love candy. 
  • There was a strong social media buzz that MSU and the University of Michigan had their autonomous vehicles on display inside a tent on Shepler's Ferry dock as visitors headed to the 2017 Mackinac Policy Conference, May 30-31. Fan support came from a chorus of tweeters from MSU, U-Michigan, MichiganPlanetM, MEDC, Shepler's Ferry, Automation Alley, CSP Plastics, Cognitive Pilot, and more.

University Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Anil Jain continues to receive recognition for his research and contributions.

  • CBS national news quoted Dr. Jain for a story on Delta Airlines' announcement it will launch a new, self-service bag drop powered by facial recognition technology, the first of its kind at U.S. airports.

  • Dr. Jain and his research team received civilian citations from the Lansing Police Department and MSU Police.

Nelson Sepulveda, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and his research team created a paper-thin, flexible device that not only can generate energy from human motion, it can act as a loudspeaker and microphone as well. Nanotechnology researchers reported on the technology on May 16 in Nature Communications.

One of the most read newspapers in Southern India published a story on the late Verghese Kurien ('48, mechanical engineering) following a May 24 ceremony at MSU honoring him. Among those attending the ceremony were Engineering Dean Leo Kempel, Executive Vice President Satish Udpa, Associate Provost Steven Hanson, and others.

Researchers in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering developed a glaucoma monitoring device to provide care when patients are away from their doctor.

University Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Lawrence Drzal was featured when more than 200 current and future leaders in the automotive and transportation industries convened May 16-17 at the Road 2 Composites Workshop at the CVRC.

Eight alumni and a teacher from Rockford Schools were honored May 6 during the 2017 Alumni Awards banquet.

Alumni News

The Mike Sadler Foundation, which honors the late Michael Sadler (AES '13), will get $1 from every specialty craft beer sold during a benefit hosted by the Colorado Spartans alumni club. Sadler, an award-winning punter on the MSU football team, died last July in a tragic car accident. His family helped create the craft beer with Jagged Mountain Brewery during a recent brewing event in Denver.

The video of Michael Geiger ('17) doing a windmill with his arms to celebrate his new Applied Engineering Sciences degree on May 7 was broadcast nationally just as his special victory for the Spartan football team in Ohio Stadium was.

Jeff VanWashenova (ELEC EGR '02) shared his thoughts on "Leveraging Autonomous Cars for Racing and Commuting" as a guest writer.

Student News

As a sophomore studying environmental engineering, Thiramet "Dream" Sotthiyapai's life plans immediately changed the day he found out he was being awarded a scholarship from Thailand's government. See his inspiring video.

PhD student Christine James in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science was featured on the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science homepage (see University Research) for her U.S. DOE Graduate Research Award on May 25.

Two Applied Engineering Sciences majors will represent the College of Engineering on the 2017-18 Homecoming Court. Students Shuning Liu and Colin White are ambassadors for activities that including Homecoming Week in October.

Incoming Students

Lakeland High School valedictorian Brendan Zuk plans to attend MSU in the fall for a degree in computer science.

Derek Cheyne is the recipient of a Michigan Automotive Parts Association (MAPA) 2017 Educational Development Scholarship Fund, valued at $1,500. He will study electrical engineering.

Kyle Kierzyk of Wheaton, Illinois, will be a member of the MSU's Honors College this fall. He will study chemical engineering and CMSE.

Evans Scholar William Meaton of Lansing Catholic High School is grateful that his good grades, good character, and caddying experiences have given him a full ride to MSU. He is interested in biomedical engineering.

Gabriel Gaskin, a standout academic student at Owosso High School with a 4.2 GPA, is headed to MSU to study civil engineering.

Joseph Riordan of Solon, Ohio, will study biosystems engineering and be a member of Honors College.

  • May 1: Electrical and computer engineer Mi Zhang has been named a 2017 NIH mHealth Scholar and will spend Aug. 6-11 at UCLA at the 2017 mHealth Training Institute working on mobile sensor data-to-knowledge.
  • May 12: James Klausner, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was a judge for the U.S.-Israel Integrated Energy and Desalination Design Challenge, May 17-18 in Jerusalem.
  • May 23: Electrical engineering graduate Anthony Sumcad received a 2017 Asian American Most Promising Engineer Award.
  • May 26: MSU University Distinguished Professor Anil Jain received a Civilian Citation from Lansing PD for using biometrics to unlock a cell phone in a murder investigation.
