Nelson Sepulveda, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and his research team created a paper-thin, flexible device that not only can generate energy from human motion, it can act as a loudspeaker and microphone as well. Nanotechnology researchers reported on the technology on May 16 in Nature Communications.

The Mike Sadler Foundation, which honors the late Michael Sadler (AES '13), will get $1 from every specialty craft beer sold during a benefit hosted by the Colorado Spartans alumni club. Sadler, an award-winning punter on the MSU football team, died last July in a tragic car accident. His family helped create the craft beer with Jagged Mountain Brewery during a recent brewing event in Denver.
The video of Michael Geiger ('17) doing a windmill with his arms to celebrate his new Applied Engineering Sciences degree on May 7 was broadcast nationally just as his special victory for the Spartan football team in Ohio Stadium was.
Jeff VanWashenova (ELEC EGR '02) shared his thoughts on "Leveraging Autonomous Cars for Racing and Commuting" as a guest writer.
Student News
As a sophomore studying environmental engineering, Thiramet "Dream" Sotthiyapai's life plans immediately changed the day he found out he was being awarded a scholarship from Thailand's government. See his inspiring video.
PhD student Christine James in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science was featured on the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science homepage (see University Research) for her U.S. DOE Graduate Research Award on May 25.
Two Applied Engineering Sciences majors will represent the College of Engineering on the 2017-18 Homecoming Court. Students Shuning Liu and Colin White are ambassadors for activities that including Homecoming Week in October.
Incoming Students
Lakeland High School valedictorian Brendan Zuk plans to attend MSU in the fall for a degree in computer science.
Derek Cheyne is the recipient of a Michigan Automotive Parts Association (MAPA) 2017 Educational Development Scholarship Fund, valued at $1,500. He will study electrical engineering.
Kyle Kierzyk of Wheaton, Illinois, will be a member of the MSU's Honors College this fall. He will study chemical engineering and CMSE.
Evans Scholar William Meaton of Lansing Catholic High School is grateful that his good grades, good character, and caddying experiences have given him a full ride to MSU. He is interested in biomedical engineering.
Gabriel Gaskin, a standout academic student at Owosso High School with a 4.2 GPA, is headed to MSU to study civil engineering.
Joseph Riordan of Solon, Ohio, will study biosystems engineering and be a member of Honors College.

- May 1: Electrical and computer engineer Mi Zhang has been named a 2017 NIH mHealth Scholar and will spend Aug. 6-11 at UCLA at the 2017 mHealth Training Institute working on mobile sensor data-to-knowledge.
- May 12: James Klausner, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was a judge for the U.S.-Israel Integrated Energy and Desalination Design Challenge, May 17-18 in Jerusalem.
- May 23: Electrical engineering graduate Anthony Sumcad received a 2017 Asian American Most Promising Engineer Award.
- May 26: MSU University Distinguished Professor Anil Jain received a Civilian Citation from Lansing PD for using biometrics to unlock a cell phone in a murder investigation.
