Michigan State University will be sending its expertise to space thanks to the development of a new Space Electronics Center. MSU’s College of Engineering and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, or FRIB, will be at the forefront of the design and testing of devices and systems for space applications at this new center.

Two leadership changes have been announced by the Michigan State University College of Engineering as the new academic year gets underway.

Ramani Narayan, University Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at Michigan State University, will speak at a high-level summit in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Sensors used to detect head impacts in athletes who play high-impact sports like football traditionally have been placed inside their helmets, which can lead to false or incomplete readings. Michigan State University researchers have created a thin sensor that instead can be worn on an athlete’s neck, which has been shown to be 90% effective at identifying concussion injuries.

Tamara Reid Bush has been named associate dean for inclusion and diversity with MSU Engineering following a national search. In this role, Reid Bush will serve on the senior management team and provide leadership for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across all areas of the college. This includes oversight for policies, practices and programmatic initiatives designed to support and recruit faculty, staff and students.

Chen is a lead principal investigator for the project. The other principal investigator is Jiayu Zhou, PhD, an associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering and an authority on machine learning, data mining, and biomedical informatics. The team also includes Richard Neubig, MD, PhD, and Edmund Ellsworth, PhD, professors of Pharmacology and Toxicology.
