Happy New Year 2019!
As we look back upon a year of both unprecedented challenges and success within the College of Engineering, I want to be sure to offer my thanks for all you do to make our remarkable progress possible. Your dedication and support build our program strength and reputation.
A damming trend
Hundreds of dams are being proposed for Mekong River basin in Southeast Asia. The negative social and environmental consequences - affecting everything from food security to the environment greatly outweigh the positive changes of this grand-scale flood control, according to new research by Michigan State University.
Hackers are lurking
During the holidays, it's not just Santa who's watching you. Hackers are lurking, so be equally mindful of your phone as you are your cash and credit cards.
Fingerprint vulnerabilities
Fingerprint authentication systems are a widely trusted, ubiquitous form of biometric authentication, deployed on billions of smartphones and other devices worldwide. Yet a new study from Michigan State University and New York University reveals a surprising level of vulnerability in these systems.
25 Years of Design Day
The Michigan State University College of Engineering will celebrate a quarter-century of student creativity and innovation on Friday, Dec. 7, during "25 Years of Design Day" - an event that has become the showcase of technical skill, experiential learning, and collaboration each semester.
Pioneering pattern recognition
Anil Jain of Michigan State University has been named a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for a lifetime of perspectives and publications that have inspired students and researchers worldwide. He was one of 46 new fellows elected at the 28th TWAS general meeting in Trieste, Italy, Nov. 27-29.
Professor Percy Pierre retires
There's a hall of fame that sits on three shelves in Percy Pierre's office in the Michigan State University College of Engineering. The black bound volumes of PhD dissertations begin with his own from 1967 and travel through time from Dale Joachim's in 1998 to more recent ones, including Kayra M. Hopkins and Armand Rashad Burks in 2017.
